Max Verstappen Dominates Singapore
Max Verstappen Dominates Singapore
Never write off a generational force.
If anyone questioned whether Max Verstappen and Red Bull could still dominate an entire Grand Prix weekend from lights out to checkered flag, the Singapore Grand Prix delivered an emphatic, unequivocal answer.
Two races, two victories in a row. Following their breakthrough win in the Malaysian jungle, Verstappen swept every meaningful accolade around the Marina Bay Street Circuit: from a treacherous, rain-soaked Sprint race triumph on Saturday to snatching pole position and keeping his right foot pinned to win the main Grand Prix on Sunday.
At Senate Grand Prix, with our very own Charlie Gibard, who was in Singapore all week, we break down a weekend where the "Jedi Master" schooled the field, Mercedes survived a terrifying high-speed scare, and the championship race reignited just in time for the trip to Texas.
Saturday Storm: The Sprint Masterclass & Russell’s Heart-Stopping Shunt
The drama began brewing long before Sunday’s main event.
Torrential tropical downpours hit Saturday's Sprint race, turning Marina Bay’s slippery street tarmac into an ice rink.
SINGAPORE SPRINT DRAMA
• Weather: Torrential tropical cloudburst | Extreme aquaplaning
• Sprint Winner: Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing)
• Major Incident: George Russell high-speed crash on the pit straight
• Heroic Evasion: Millimetre-perfect avoidance by following Ferrari
• Track Safety: Rapid, flawless response from Singapore marshals and FIA
The Escape on the Straight: Coming onto the high-speed main straight, George Russell lost the rear of his Mercedes under heavy wheelspin, snapped violently into the wall, and scattered carbon-fibre debris across the track at well over 100 mph.
The Dodge: With the stricken Silver Arrow stranded broadside in dense spray, a following Ferrari had to take evasive action at the last fraction of a second. It could have been horrific, but razor-sharp reflexes, modern crash structures, and swift marshals kept Russell uninjured.
Verstappen’s Composure: Amidst the spray, low visibility, and safety car restarts, Verstappen did what he does best: commanded the wet lines, managed tyre pressures, and marched to an untroubled Sprint victory.
Sunday Showdown: Turn 1 Bravery Over Ferrari
Qualifying showed that Red Bull's mid-season floor and suspension development packages have finally unlocked the balance Verstappen was begging for earlier this season.
He put the car on pole with a magical qualifying lap, but Sunday’s start tested his race craft.
2026 SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX: THE TOP FIVE
1. 🥇 Max Verstappen (Red Bull) - 1:42:00.785 | Back-to-Back Winner
2. 🥈 Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) - +7.335s
3. 🥉 Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) - +24.573s | Critical Podium
4. 4th: Lando Norris (McLaren) - +40.506s
5. 5th: Oscar Piastri (McLaren) - +49.644s
The Launch: When the 20 red lights went out under the neon glow, Charles Leclerc launched off the line with greater initial bite.
For a split second, it looked as though Leclerc would sweep past both Lewis Hamilton and Verstappen into the lead.
The Warrior Mentality: Verstappen refused to yield. Trusting his car’s front-end bite and his braking markers, Max held his line around the outside of Turn 1, forcing Leclerc to concede the apex on the entry to Turn 2.
Flawless Execution: Once through the first complex in clean air, Verstappen put on a clinic. He managed tyre temperatures across the abrasive traction zones while Ferrari and McLaren chewed through their rubber, then cruised home to an imperious victory.
The Garage Dynamic: Mercedes on the Back Foot
While Kimi Antonelli drove a mature, calculated race to secure third place and bank crucial points to protect his championship lead, Mercedes clearly looked second-best in raw race pace over the weekend.
With McLaren surging and Ferrari showing immense single-lap speed, the Silver Arrows no longer have the comfort margin they enjoyed earlier in the European summer.
Russell’s weekend was thoroughly compromised after he started down the order following his Saturday shunt and finished 9th.
Next Stop: Circuit of the Americas, Austin (October 23–25)
Red Bull is once again a well-oiled winning machine. Two consecutive wins in Sepang and Marina Bay have completely shifted the paddock's psychological momentum.
Formula 1® now crosses the Atlantic to Austin, Texas, for the United States Grand Prix at COTA (October 23–25). With the sweeping esses of Sector 1, massive elevation changes up to Turn 1, and Antonelli facing his first match point to seal the World Drivers' Championship, the championship pressure cooker is about to explode in the Lone Star State.
And as always, when the lights go out and the drama unfolds, here at Senate Grand Prix, there is only one winner, and that's you, the race fans!
