History Of the Texas Grand Prix
The History of COTA, US Grand Prix
I remember this racetrack being built and the hills bulldozed into place, replacing the Turn 1 hill with the biggest hill in F1®, and I can't believe this seemingly new track is now 14 years old, almost a heritage track. But I love this track and the cultural weekend of the Austin, Texas Grand Prix.
Conceived by promoter Tavo Hellmund and billionaire investor Red McCombs, the ambition was audacious: build a grade-1 circuit in Texas's live-music capital that could rival Spa, Silverstone, and Suzuka.
COTA ARCHITECTURAL IDENTITY
- Lead Designer: Hermann Tilke in collaboration with HKS
- Track Length: 5.513 km (3.426 miles) | 20 Turns (11 Left, 9 Right)
- Elevation Differential: 41 meters (133 ft) climbing an 11% gradient at Turn 1
- Turns 3 to 6: Modelled on Silverstone’s Maggotts/Becketts complex
- Turns 12 to 15: Echoing Hockenheim’s stadium arena
- Turns 16 to 18: Mirroring Istanbul Park’s multi-apex Turn 8
1978 World Champion Mario Andretti officially christened the track on October 21, 2012. A month later, over 100,000 fans packed the hills to witness Lewis Hamilton hunt down Sebastian Vettel to score McLaren’s final victory of that era before his historic switch to Mercedes.
COTA has hosted championship-crowning triumphs, monsoon rescues, and epic wheel-to-wheel duels:
2015 – The Hurricane & Hamilton’s 3rd Crown:
Torrential storms washed out Saturday running, but Sunday delivered pure chaos. Hamilton capitalised on a late mistake by Nico Rosberg to seal his third World Championship, triggering the infamous "cap-gate" cooldown room fallout.

2018 – Kimi’s Final Ferrari Hurrah: In a tactical clinic against Hamilton and Verstappen, Kimi Räikkönen secured his 21st and final Grand Prix victory, Ferrari's most popular USGP win of the modern era.
2021 to 2023 – The Verstappen Stranglehold: Max Verstappen turned Austin into his personal fortress, taking consecutive victories and fending off frantic late-race charges in front of record-breaking 440,000-strong weekend crowds.
2024 – Scarlet Redemption: Charles Leclerc led a dominant Ferrari 1-2, proving that tactical discipline and tyre conservation could conquer Austin’s abrasive track surface.
The VIP Evolution: The Rise of COTA’s Elite Hospitality Clubs
Beyond the racing, COTA revolutionised Formula 1® by merging top-tier motorsport with authentic American festival hospitality. Here, the modern "VIP Club" culture took root, blending Texas barbecue, champagne lounges, and trackside luxury.
THE ICONIC COTA HOSPITALITY PORTFOLIO
• The F1® Paddock Club: The pinnacle of luxury perched above the team garages and pit lane
• Club SI: Two-story ultra-lounge commanding Turn 12, the primary braking zone
• Turn 1 Luxury Suites: Semi-private, elevated terraces overlooking the blind uphill hairpin
• The Terrace at Turn 6: High-octane views of the rapid Sector 1 esses
• The Stadium (Turns 13–15): Intimate amphitheatre views of technical, slow-speed combat
At Senate Grand Prix, we curate access across these premier viewing sanctuaries. Whether you're watching cars launch off the 41-meter climb into Turn 1 from a private cabana or sipping champagne at Turn 12 as cars decelerate from 330 km/h after the back straight, Austin offers a hospitality energy found nowhere else in racing.
From a bold blueprint carved into Texas clay to an international sporting juggernaut, COTA has cemented itself as an indispensable modern classic.
And as always, when the lights go out and the drama unfolds, here at Senate Grand Prix, there is only one winner, and that's you, the race fans!
