History of the Singapore Grand Prix
The Complete History of the Singapore Grand Prix
When Formula 1® first unveiled the concept of staging a world championship Grand Prix under thousands of industrial floodlights in the heart of Southeast Asia, sceptics called it an impossible logistical fantasy.
I remember watching it for the first time on TV, and I could not believe I was witnessing Formula One® cars in a night race... and it was instantly clear that F1 could go everywhere.
Today, the Singapore Grand Prix around the Marina Bay Street Circuit stands as one of the definitive crown jewels of modern motorsport: a neon-lit, humidity-soaked marathon that transformed Formula 1® forever.
At Senate Grand Prix, our hospitality teams have been trackside in Marina Bay since the floodlights were first powered on.
Here is the full history of F1’s original night race from its 1960s roots to its modern status as motorsport’s ultimate test of human endurance.
The Forgotten Era: The Thomson Road Circuit (1961–1973)
Long before the hyper-modern skyline of Marina Bay, Singapore’s relationship with motorsport began on the public roads of the island's central reservoir:
The Orient Year Grand Prix (1961): First organised as part of the "Visit Singapore" tourism campaign, the inaugural event took place along the treacherous Thomson Road circuit.
The Independence Era: Renamed the Singapore Grand Prix in 1966 following the nation's independence, the non-championship race ran for Formula Libre and Formula 2 machinery.
A Notorious Gauntlet: Featuring iconic, terrifying landmarks like the blind "Devil’s Bend" and the bumpy "Snakes" chicane, the narrow street circuit had virtually no runoff.
After seven fatalities over 11 years, the Singapore government halted the event following the 1973 edition due to rising safety concerns and the 1970s global oil crisis.
2008: The Night Race Revolution at Marina Bay
After a 35-year absence, Formula 1® orchestrator Bernie Ecclestone and Singaporean entrepreneur Ong Beng Seng struck a landmark deal to bring Grand Prix racing back to the Lion City with a revolutionary twist.
The 2008 inaugural race became instantly legendary and controversial.
While Fernando Alonso took victory for Renault, the race was later overshadowed by the infamous "Crashgate" scandal involving Nelson Piquet Jr., which led to massive FIA investigations that reshaped team management structures for years.
Beyond the Track: The Grand Prix Festival
The Singapore Grand Prix revolutionised what an F1® weekend could be by pioneering the modern "race-meets-rock-festival" format.
With massive headline concerts inside the Padang drawing hundreds of thousands of spectators and Michelin-starred hospitality terraces on the rooftop of Marina Bay Sands, Singapore set the blueprint for modern destination races from Abu Dhabi to Miami and Las Vegas.
From the hum of the high-voltage generators illuminating the Singapore Flyer to the roar of hybrid power units echoing off colonial architecture, the Singapore Grand Prix remains the ultimate modern motorsport spectacle.
And as always, when the lights go out and the drama unfolds, here at Senate Grand Prix, there is only one winner: you, the race fans!
