The 2026 Italian Grand Prix delivered a whirlwind of shock, romance, and pure racing theatre that will be talked about for generations as the young Italian Upstart did it again.

I was shocked when Pierre Gasly’s thunderbolt qualifying lap on Saturday, celebrated in the paddock alongside his partner Kika Cerqueira Gomes after putting Alpine in the spotlight, led to the absolute euphoria that engulfed the royal park.

Saturday afternoon threw the form book out of the window. 

Taking full advantage of low-drag aero trims and slipstream dynamics, Pierre Gasly stunned the entire paddock by snatching an unexpected pole position. 

It brought pure, unadulterated joy to the Alpine garage and set up a front-row spectacle. 

At the same time, Mercedes digested the bitter pill of Kimi Antonelli’s power unit penalty that consigned the young Italian to P20.

• Surgical Precision: In stifling track heat that pushed cockpit temperatures beyond 50°C, the 19-year-old picked off cars with surgical accuracy into the Variante del Rettifilo and Roggia chicanes without locking up a single tyre.

• The Tifosi Eruption: When Antonelli took the checkered flag, Monza erupted. While Ferrari upgrades brought Lewis Hamilton onto the podium in third, the home crowd flooded the tarmac beneath the cantilever podium in a sea of scarlet and tricolour flags, chanting the name of Italy’s newest racing prodigy.

Antonelli’s seventh victory of 2026 stretches his championship lead to 267 points, leaving him firmly on course to become the youngest World Drivers' Champion in the history of Formula 1®.
