It is that time of the week when the paddock holds its breath, the telemetry screens light up, and we put reputations on the line, and I must cover this by saying I am never right with my predictions. 

Winding through the historic avenues and glass-fronted boulevards of the Caspian coast, the Baku City Circuit is ready to host the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

While I might claim to be terrible at predictions. 

Looking at the form book, the cars' aerodynamic characteristics, and the psychological stakes this weekend, it is going to be tough to call. 

So, as we break down why I'm guessing this specific five-person lineup for this race, the reality in the Land of Fire could be very different.

1st: Lando Norris (McLaren) — The Unstoppable Wave

The case for Lando Norris taking the top step is backed by raw telemetry and unstoppable momentum.

• The Hunger for Revenge: Norris was robbed of victory around Madrid's IFEMA circuit solely due to the timing of that Virtual Safety Car. He enters Baku driving with the swagger, precision, and relentless aggression of a reigning World Champion who knows his car is the class of the field.

2nd: Max Verstappen (Red Bull) — The Street Fighter's Masterclass

You can never count out Max Verstappen on an unforgiving street layout.

While the Red Bull RB22 still suffers from aerodynamic drag and a lack of baseline downforce compared to McLaren, Verstappen treats street barriers like apex markers. His ability to brake later than anyone into the heavy 90-degree stops of Sector 1 and nurse his rear tyres through extreme slipstream turbulence makes him lethal.

3rd: Sir Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) — The Baku Veteran's Redemption

Lewis Hamilton's street-circuit pedigree in Baku is legendary, and putting him on the podium is an inspired pick.

After the heartbreak of his brake-failure DNF in Madrid, Fred Vasseur's squad has spent the week overhauling their carbon cooling ducts to avoid another overheating disaster. 

Ferrari's power unit still boasts explosive top-end straight-line grunt, and down that monstrous 2.2 km main straight, Hamilton will have the horsepower to launch decisive slipstream attacks into Turn 1.

4th: Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) — The Pragmatic Championship Drive

Slotting the 19-year-old championship leader in fourth is a risk, but Antonelli does not need to risk everything against the Armco barriers of Baku. With an 80-plus point championship cushion under his belt following his Madrid triumph, a mature, composed P4 finish keeps his points tally rolling without taking unnecessary gambles in the castle section.

5th: Oscar Piastri (McLaren) — Banishing the 2025 Ghosts

Rounding out your top five with Oscar Piastri is the ultimate narrative arc of the weekend.

Twelve months ago, Piastri's brush with the castle barriers here in Baku triggered that fateful downward spiral in his 2025 championship campaign. 

The Australian has endured a frustrating, confidence-sapping dip in form throughout 2026, but Baku offers the ultimate stage for personal exorcism. Bringing the second Papaya car home in fifth would steady the ship, secure vital constructors' points, and prove he has put those ghosts to bed once and for all.

The Missing Factor: George Russell on the Outside

Once again, George Russell misses my top five and given the internal friction at Mercedes and his recent struggles to match Antonelli's razor-sharp edge, he will have to fight tooth and nail to prove this prediction wrong.

With Qualifying on Friday and the Grand Prix on Saturday, the margin for error is zero. The streets of Baku are waiting to bite!
