Can Ferrari’s Monza Power Unit Upgrade Dethrone the Silver Arrows?

After a stunning Zandvoort race and a masterclass of driving by the current F1® World Champion, Lando Norris, our next stop in this second half of the season is the Italian Monza Grand Prix, and I, for one, am excited for many reasons.

At Senate Grand Prix, we keep our ears firmly to the ground in the pit lane, and the technical whispers coming out of Maranello suggest a massive showdown is brewing.

Heading into the second half of the season, reports indicate Ferrari is preparing to unleash a significant power unit upgrade for their home race at Monza, and that's why I am excited.

The 2026 engine regulations have been a challenge. So far, only Mercedes has nailed it under the expert eye of Toto Wolff.

Technical clarifications and the FIA's hot-measurement testing have tightened those margins, and Ferrari's engine department, led by Enrico Gualtieri, has spent the opening rounds refining its own high-temperature combustion and energy-deployment tricks; reports suggest Ferrari is ready to launch an engine upgrade at Monza.

I am excited to see a Ferrari renaissance, especially as they are now not too far away from the front runners. 

This new engine upgrade could be what they need to close the championship gap in the second half of the season, and what better place to launch a faster package than the temple of speed, in front of the tifosi.

Hunting Down the F1® Crown

Hamilton’s relentless drive for an eighth World Championship has never looked sharper. With Leclerc providing consistent front-running speed and consistent podium finishes, Ferrari genuinely believes the championship momentum can flip in the autumn. 

If I am honest, there were team radio messages at Zandvoort where Lewis was very vocal that the scarlet red team made calls too late and made decisions that affected podium places, which needs to be ironed out leading into the Italian Grand Prix next week. 

I imagine there will be meetings to look at Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton's harmony and strategy plans.

If Maranello’s new power unit package hits the ground running in Monza, the Silver Arrows won't just be looking in their mirrors; they'll be in a full-blown dogfight to defend their lead, and with Kimi Antonelli looking for a home-race victory and Ferrari looking for the same, dogfight is the right phrase.
