Return to Sepang: The Masterclass Guide to the Malaysian Grand Prix

With official confirmation that the Sepang International Circuit is returning to the Formula 1® calendar on October 2–4 to host the relocated Bahrain Grand Prix, teams and drivers are preparing to re-encounter one of F1® racing's absolute engineering masterpieces, and here is a breakdown of this world-class racetrack.

Sepang’s 5.543km layout—defined by its massive 16-to-22-meter track width, extreme tropical humidity, and double parallel straights—offers some of the purest wheel-to-wheel action in motorsport, and this is a big thing for me; the heat and humidity will be a massive challenge for Kimi Antonelli, and this is where the channegle of F1® criss crossing the glob can break a driver challenging for a world driver championship. 

Sector 1: The Tactical Opening

• T1 & T2 (The Tight Switchback): The massive main straight leads into a brutal braking zone. 
• Drivers lock the inside front wheel heading into Turn 1, a tightening downhill right-hander. An immediate flick left into Turn 2 requires patience on the throttle to avoid spinning the rear tyres on exit.
• T3: A long, sweeping uphill right-hander where smooth throttle application sets up a massive DRS acceleration run down to Turn 4.
• T4 (Langkawi Curve): A heavy-braking 90-degree right-hander. The wide entry allows multiple racing lines, making it a primary overtaking zone.

Sector 2: High-Speed Precision & Off-Camber Traps

• T5 & T6: A blistering, high-speed S-bend taking inspiration from Silverstone’s Maggots/Becketts. Drivers pull up to 4.5g while carrying over 150mph through the sweeping left-right direction change.
• T7 & T8: A double-apex right-hander taken in 4th gear. T8 requires a late apex while constantly managing lateral load on the left-side tyres.
• T9 (Berjaya Tioman Corner): A slow, extremely tricky left hairpin taken uphill. Off-camber and tight, it invites lockups and mid-corner understeer.
• T10 & T11 (Genting Curve): Accelerating out of Turn 9, drivers sweep through the fast Turn 10 right-hander before braking heavily while turning into Turn 11.

Sector 3: The Flowing Blast & Parallel Hairpin

• T12 & T13: A rapid, flowing left-right chicane that leads drivers onto the back section of the circuit.
• T14 (Sunway Lagoon Corner): A long, closing-radius right-hander that demands early throttle application to maximise exit speed down the long back straight.
• T15 (The Off-Camber Final Hairpin): The famous last braking zone. Redesigned with a negative camber (sloped away from the apex), drivers can dive down the inside or run wide to launch back out onto the pit straight.
