Budapest Masterclass As Lando Norris Claims First 2026 Triumph in Hungarian Thriller

For me, I love this race, and once again the Hungaroring never fails to deliver.

In a weekend defined by track penalties, yellow flags, and heartbreaking DNFs, reigning World Champion Lando Norris executed a brilliant, clinical drive to claim his first victory of the 2026 season.

At Senate Grand Prix, we deal in pure trackside reality—and McLaren played the tactical cards in front of them with perfection.

The Trackside Breakdown

  • The Papaya Duel: An intense opening-lap tussle between Norris and Oscar Piastri set the tempo. Despite Piastri snatching an early advantage, a tangle with back-markers and a late gearbox failure forced the Australian out, leaving Norris to command the pace and even being told to slow down to break his 2026 drought.

  • The Wheelbarrow Wizard: Once again, Max Verstappen demonstrated his uncanny ability to wrestle raw pace from his Red Bull. Brushing aside practice setup struggles, the Dutchman sliced through traffic—including a stunning pass on Lewis Hamilton—to drag his machine onto the second step of the podium.

  • The Ferrari Grind: While Sir Lewis Hamilton endured a frustrating afternoon hampered by a 5-second pit lane speeding penalty, Ferrari continues to be the most consistent threat across varying track layouts.

Kimi Antonelli and George Russell

  • Antonelli's Long Game: Finishing third, 19-year-old championship leader Kimi Antonelli drove a mature, calculated race. Balancing heavy tyre management against a late-charging pack, the young Italian played the long game to extend his World Championship buffer.

The Eight-Car Convergence

What makes this 2026 evolution so intoxicating is the sheer rate of development.

Across Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull, eight drivers arrive at every single race with the realistic potential to claim top honours. As each engineering office analyses their active aerodynamics and power deployment packages, the gap at the front is disappearing rapidly, making it seem like any one of the top eight could win!

Furthermore, I can only imagine what it will look like in 2027 when everyone catches up. Personally, I really enjoy this new racing format!
