A European Finale? F1® Faces Calendar Shake-Up as Middle East Uncertainty Looms

While we share fans' disappointment at calendar disruptions across the Middle East, Formula 1® leadership has officially opened the door to a historic, Europe-based conclusion for the 2026 World Championship. 

I, for one, will miss these hot-weather night races, for the experience, the racing, the culture and the fun world-class events these races have become, with the Arabian races really becoming heritage races and a firm part of F1's past, present and future. 

F1® President Stefano Domenicali confirmed on Wednesday that if ongoing geopolitical conflict prevents the sport from racing in Qatar (Nov 27–29) and Abu Dhabi (Dec 4–6), the 2026 season finale will be relocated directly to European soil.

The September Deadline & European Alternatives

Following the earlier cancellation of rounds in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia with Bahrain successfully relocated to Sepang, Malaysia for October 4, F1® is managing the remaining calendar with a strict timeline:

• Mid-September Decision: Domenicali emphasised that while tickets for Qatar and Abu Dhabi remain sold out, a final call on whether the events can go ahead as scheduled will be made no later than mid-September.

• Imola & Portimao Front-Runners: Should relocation prove necessary, historic venues like Imola in Italy and Portugal's Portimao are at the top of the contingency list to host the final double-header.

2026 CALENDAR ADJUSTMENTS AT A GLANCE

• Original Calendar: 24 Rounds

• Current Standing: 23 Rounds (Saudi Arabia cancelled)

• Relocated: Bahrain GP → Sepang, Malaysia (October 4)

• Pending Evaluation: Qatar & Abu Dhabi (Decision by Mid-September)

• Contingency Plan: European Double-Header (Imola / Portimao)

Winter Racing & An Undisputed Champion

A late-November or early-December finale in Europe introduces an unprecedented variable: freezing track temperatures. 

While air temperatures in northern Italy or Portugal could drop significantly compared to desert night races, Domenicali noted that expected conditions remain comparable to the chill drivers experience at the Las Vegas Grand Prix in late November.

Crucially, completing a 21- to 23-race schedule guarantees that whoever lifts the 2026 Drivers' World Championship trophy will do so over a full, rigorous campaign, leaving zero room for scepticism around the crown.
