A History of the Canadian Grand Prix
A History of the Canadian Grand Prix
As the Formula 1® circus descends upon Montreal, the team at Senate Grand Prix is preparing for our 35th year on the Île Notre-Dame.
For us, the Canadian Grand Prix isn't just another race on the calendar; it is a high-speed festival that captures the true heart of North American racing.
The Canadian race track, from its early days, has become a modern, world-class spectacle, and we’ve watched this artificial island transform into a gladiatorial arena where the world's best drivers meet their match.
A Legacy Built on the St. Lawrence
The story of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is one of national pride. Born on the roads of the Expo ’67 site, the track debuted in 1978 with a fairy tale victory by the legendary Gilles Villeneuve himself, driving for Ferrari.
- The Evolution: In our 35-plus years of attendance, we’ve seen the circuit evolve from a "temporary" road course into a technical masterpiece.
- The Infamous "Wall of Champions": We were there in 1999 when the final chicane claimed three world champions—Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher, and Jacques Villeneuve—cementing the track's reputation for unforgiving jeopardy.
The Senate Perspective: Growing with Montreal
When we first began hosting guests in Montreal over three decades ago, the event was a favourite among "purist" fans. Today, it has grown into one of the top three most-watched sporting events globally, often rivalling the Super Bowl and the Champions League final for viewership.
Why Montreal is World-Class
What makes Canada unique is the atmosphere. The city of Montreal doesn't just host a race; it becomes the race. From the street parties on Crescent Street to our exclusive hospitality suites overlooking the Senna 'S', the energy is unmatched.
As we look toward the 2026 battle—where Kimi Antonelli leads the standings, and the "Fire Horse" of Ferrari is hunting for its first win of the new era—the Canadian Grand Prix remains the ultimate test of bravery and braking.
At Senate Grand Prix, we are proud to have been a part of this history for 35 years. We know every chicane, every grandstand, and exactly where the best poutine in the paddock is found.
And as always, when the lights go out and the drama unfolds, here at Senate Grand Prix, there is only one winner, and that's you, the race fans!
