Will Jonathan Wheatley Join Aston Martin?
Rumours are rife online, with reports that Adrian Newey is stepping down as Team Principal of Aston Martin after just four months in the hot seat.
I want to make it clear that this is all rumour at this point. F1 highly values Adrian Newey as an F1 God, and his accolades speak for themselves; he is often called the Genius of the F1 world.
Taking his place in a sensational rumoured swoop is Jonathan Wheatley, who may depart the Audi project to reunite with his former Red Bull colleague.
At Senate Grand Prix, we’ve always believed that Newey is an F1 genius who belongs in F1.
This isn't a retreat; it's a tactical realignment.
Technical Focus: The AMR26 Needs Its Architect
The start of the 2026 era has been nothing short of a "nightmare" for Aston Martin.
Between the vibration issues plaguing the new Honda power unit and a lack of race-distance reliability, the AMR26 has struggled to stay in the midfield, let alone challenge the "Big Four."
If the rumours are true, stepping back to the Drawing Board is an advantage, not a disadvantage: By stepping back into a pure Technical Leadership role, Newey would now be free to spend 100% of his time on the Silverstone campus, spearheading the redesigns needed to make the Honda partnership work.
The Wheatley Factor: Red Bull "Know-How" Returns
In potentially appointing Jonathan Wheatley, Lawrence Stroll has pulled off a masterstroke. Wheatley spent nearly two decades at Red Bull as Sporting Director, where he and Newey forged one of the most successful technical-operational partnerships in F1 history.
The Senate Verdict: A Necessary "Sideways Step"
We are huge Adrian Newey fans here at Senate, and it was clear from the Australia and Shanghai weekends that the team was lacking and not where they want to be, so it's a case of onwards and upwards and for the team to find solutions.
And as always, when the lights go out and the drama unfolds, here at Senate Grand Prix, there is only one winner, and that's you, the race fans!
