The Texas Showdown: COTA Set to Explode
Now, there's no secret I love this race, and I love the vibrant city of Austin, Texas.
This weekend at the Circuit of the Americas, it promises to be an absolute thriller, leaving us here at Senate HQ with a very mixed bag of opinions on who will win this unpredictable race.
The tension is ramping up with just six races remaining.
The title fight is boiling over, and could follow onto a showdown at sunset ending in Abu Dhabi, with the three most prominent names in the sport—McLaren, Red Bull, and Mercedes—all looking primed for victory.
The Red Bull Factor: Max's Relentless Charge
After a dominant victory in Baku, Max Verstappen arrives at COTA in formidable form, and with a Senate Grand Prix Instagram pole 60% of you have also chosen Max to win this weekend.
The four-time world champions, Dutch sensation, love the track at COTA, which offers a blend of high-speed sections and heavy braking zones, having won here three times before.
Although the mathematical gap to championship leader Oscar Piastri remains significant (63 points), Max and Red Bull have gained a massive 41 points on the Australian in the last three races alone.
This weekend at the COTA race circuit features an F1 Sprint race, offering an extra 8 points for a victory on Saturday.
With Red Bull's recent upgrades and team principal Laurent Mekies, the formidable race team is certainly finding its groove with Max.
The Papaya Civil War
The biggest story, however, remains the internal friction at McLaren, which is a natural turn of events for two drivers striving for immortality, as a WDC will bring.
The infamous contact between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in Singapore was not an isolated incident; it was the final catalyst in their escalating rivalry.
Norris, having been cleared by the stewards, has stated he was just "racing hard," but the fallout has left a visible crack in the team's facade.
- Oscar Piastri still leads the championship, but his lead has been trimmed to a tense 22 points. He needs to immediately recover his characteristic composure after a scrappy race in Singapore, and COTA's precision-demanding Esses will be the perfect place to do it.
- Lando Norris is effectively the hunter, showing immense fighting spirit. The mood is now highly competitive, with both drivers fully aware that every mistake is magnified.
The immense pressure on Zak Brown and Team Principal Andrea Stella is undeniable.
While they insist they are letting their drivers race, the possibility of a coming-together into the tight Turn 1 hairpin or the high-speed Esses is very real.
This delicate intra-team battle is likely to be the deciding factor in the 2025 WDC.
Ferrari's Wildcard: Leclerc is Due a Win
We cannot overlook Charles Leclerc.
While Ferrari has struggled with race pace this year, the Monegasque driver is renowned for his blistering single-lap speed and has the raw talent to capitalise on points.
It's easy to forget that Leclerc took a surprise victory in Austin last year, proving that COTA can spring an upset even in the most competitive seasons.
Ferrari is indeed desperate for a win and to defend their position in the Constructors' standings.
Leclerc is long overdue for a triumph, and Austin might just be the place he gets it, and with Lewis set to hit one of his favourite race tracks, Ferrari could deliver some surprises.
The Circuit of The Americas is iconic and is the perfect stage for this dramatic confluence of championship battles.
From the fight for pole to the inevitable strategic gambles on Sunday, the US Grand Prix is set to be fast, fierce, and unpredictable until the very last lap.
