Max-Mercedes & Wolff Draws a Line
The Formula 1® paddock is a hothouse of speculation, especially when it comes to driver contracts and the future of the grid. Reigning champion Max Verstappen has been at the very epicentre of this, with whispers of a sensational move to Mercedes for the radical 2026 season reaching fever pitch.
Toto Wolff has delivered a definitive statement, aiming to scupper any ideas about pushing George Russell or Kimi Antonelli out of the picture. He’s claimed they’re Mercedes’ “absolute priority.”
Sardinia is a Coincidence, Says Wolff
The speculation reached new heights during the brief break between the British and Belgian Grands Prix.
Reports, particularly from Ralf Schumacher, pointed fans in the direction of jet and yacht tracking data that implied the crafts of both Verstappen and Wolff were spotted in Sardinia, leading to widespread speculation of secret contract talks.
While some early reports of a direct face-to-face meeting were eventually dismissed, with Mercedes sources claiming the proximity of their private vessels was a "pure coincidence," the sheer volume of speculation spoke volumes about the F1® world's fascination.
Helmut Marko, ever pragmatic, even gave his star driver permission to meet with Mercedes regarding his future, though he quickly reiterated Max's contract until 2028.
Mercedes' "Absolute Priority": Russell and Antonelli
However, today's news from Toto Wolff is a strong counter-narrative. The contracts of both Mercedes’ current drivers, George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli, will expire after the 2025 F1 season.
While both drivers have expressed their confidence in being re-signed to Mercedes, there have been no firm guarantees – particularly because of Max Verstappen’s future.
Wolff played down any "big surprises" over the summer break, emphasising that "The direction of travel is definitely that we want to continue with George and Kimi.
That is the absolute priority." He acknowledged that a talent like Verstappen can't be ignored entirely, especially with the 2026 regulations introducing a seismic shift in power unit technology. Still, he firmly rejected any suggestion that a surprise deal would happen immediately.
The backdrop to this entire driver market drama is Red Bull’s recent struggles and significant internal changes. The team’s performance has noticeably slipped from its dominant 2023 form, with major players having departed, including Christian Horner (recently dismissed as Team Principal and CEO), design genius Adrian Newey, highly regarded Sporting Director Jonathan Wheatley, and Chief Engineering Officer Rob Marshall, among others.
So, while Toto Wolff has now drawn a clear line in the sand, publicly stating his priority lies with his current young talents, the F1 world is never short of twists. The contract talks with both Russell and Antonelli are "ongoing and productive," according to Wolff.
