Kings of the Hungaroring: Budapest's Greatest Winners

As the Formula 1® season charges towards Budapest, we find ourselves heading to one of the most unique and challenging circuits on the calendar: the Hungaroring. Nestled in a natural bowl near Budapest, this track is home to the Hungarian Grand Prix.

The Hungaroring first opened in 1986, making history by hosting the first Formula 1 race behind the Iron Curtain.

1. Sir Lewis Hamilton: (8 Wins)

When it comes to the Hungaroring, one name stands head and shoulders above the rest: Sir Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time World Champion boasts an incredible eight victories here (2007, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020).

2. Michael Schumacher: (4 Wins)

Trailing Sir Lewis Hamilton with four victories to his name is the legendary Michael Schumacher (1994, 1998, 2001, 2004). Schumacher's wins at the Hungaroring often showcased his strategic brilliance and his incredible ability to push the car to its absolute limits.

3. Ayrton Senna: (3 Wins)

Another F1 icon, Ayrton Senna, captured three victories at the Hungaroring (1988, 1991, 1992). The 'Magic' of Senna was often on full display at circuits that demanded pinpoint accuracy and supreme car control, and the tight, twisty nature of Budapest perfectly suited his unique driving style. His duels here, especially in the earlier years, are etched into F1 folklore.

4. Nelson Piquet, Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve, Mika Häkkinen, Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel, Max Verstappen (2 Wins Each)

A tie for fourth place sees a remarkable seven drivers with two victories apiece at the Hungaroring!

  • Nelson Piquet (1986, 1987) secured the very first Hungarian Grand Prix victories.
  • Damon Hill (1993, 1995) famously took his maiden F1 win here in '93.
  • Jacques Villeneuve (1996, 1997) added two more Williams triumphs.
  • Mika Häkkinen (1999, 2000) continued McLaren's strong run.
  • Jenson Button (2006, 2011) also claimed his breakthrough F1 victory here in 2006.
  • Sebastian Vettel (2015, 2017) showcased his consistency with Ferrari.
  • And most recently, Max Verstappen (2022, 2023) has begun to build his formidable legacy, adding two consecutive wins in recent years.

The Hungaroring is challenging, with blistering summer heat, and tests a driver's rhythm and tyre management. These legendary names stand as a testament to the skill required to conquer this Hungarian gem.
