Adrian Newey The Mind Behind the Magic is Already in 2026
Seeing Adrian Newey on the grid at Silverstone is always a welcoming sight.
For those of us who have followed his illustrious career over the last three decades, watching him walk around with that tattered old notepad, making sketches, is becoming increasingly interesting, especially as the focus has turned to the new 2026 model.
At the recent British Grand Prix, his rare trackside appearance was particularly noteworthy.
Aside from a brief visit to Monaco in May and a cameo at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Newey has mainly been sequestered within Aston Martin’s 'campus' near Silverstone since he officially started at the team in March.
What's truly fascinating is his gaze. At Silverstone, his eyes were reportedly locked on the McLaren's rear, specifically studying their braking system and rear wheels.
This is Newey all over – despite overseeing 12 Constructors' Championship-winning cars since 1992, he's never too proud to learn from others' ideas. It’s this insatiable curiosity and meticulous attention to detail that sets him apart.
Playing Jazz at Aston Martin
However, don't expect Adrian to be drawn into solving the immediate problems of Aston Martin's current car.
The word from inside the factory is clear: "Every time we ask something about this year or how to improve something, he gets up and goes to another office. So he’s already in 2026 mode…"
This confirms the prevailing belief that Newey's entire focus is on developing Aston Martin’s response to the radical 2026 technical reset.
He's a guy that loves to build things from scratch, and team owner Lawrence Stroll has given him the platform to "play jazz" – to design a car from the ground up without the constraints of evolving an existing concept.
Adding to this urgency is Fernando Alonso. Now into his 40s and painfully aware of the passage of time, the two-time World Champion is also in a hurry to get back into a speedy car again before his illustrious career concludes.
So, while Adrian Newey might be a physical presence on the grid with his sketchbook, his brilliant mind is firmly planted in the future, conceptualising the next generation of Formula 1® greatness for Aston Martin. The current struggles are, for him, simply part of the journey towards the grand ambition of 2026.
And as always, when the lights go out and the drama unfolds, here at Senate Grand Prix, there is only one winner, and that's you, the race fans!
