Fun Facts About The Monaco Grand Prix

Monaco Grand Prix: A Legacy of Speed, Glamour, and Unpredictability

Some of us at Senate Grand Prix have spent decades either working at or simply soaking in the atmosphere of the Monaco Grand Prix. It's more than just a race—an experience etched in time.

So we have put together some fascinating facts about the Monaco Grand Prix.

A Grand History:

The first race in the streets of Monaco was held in 1929And in 1950, it was officially initiated into the Formula 1® World Championship

Monaco is distinguished in motorsport's Triple Crown, alongside the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Achieving victory in all three marks a driver as truly exceptional. Graham Hill, nicknamed Mr. Monaco, is the only driver who has accomplished this.

Unique in Distance and Demands:

Interestingly, Monaco is the only Grand Prix that doesn't meet the FIA's minimum race distance of 305 kilometres (190 miles). Instead, the race spans 260 kilometres (approximately 161 miles), covering 78 demanding laps.

The circuit winds through the principality, covering most of the city.

It features incredibly tight corners, significant elevation changes, and dangerous blind corners, most notably the climb up Beau Rivage.

The presence of a tunnel adds another layer of complexity and danger. These tight bends and corners make qualifying exceptionally important.

A Playground for the Rich & Famous:

Monaco is not just a race. Beyond the race event and the sound of single-seater race cars, Monaco is synonymous with glamour and prestige.

It's a magnet for A-listers, billionaires, and millionaires, creating an atmosphere like a continuous, dazzling spectacle. The harbour comes alive, and trackside, the energy is palpable and growing in popularity each year as the Yachts get bigger and crowds grow to record-breaking sellout records.

Record-Breaking Performances:

The current lap record stands at a blistering 1 minute 12 seconds, set by Lewis Hamilton in his Mercedes W12 in 2021. Regarding sheer dominance, Ayrton Senna reigns supreme with six incredible victories. Considering his remarkable Monaco career, many believe he could have added another two Monaco wins to that tally if not for external factors and an uncharacteristic error at the Portier corner.

On the constructor front, McLaren and Mercedes have an impressive 15 wins each at this prestigious circuit. One could break away to claim the lead with a 16th victory this year.

Bugatti won the first-ever Monaco Grand Prix in 1929.

Another Interesting fact is that only two Monégasque drivers have won at the Monaco Grand Prix: Louis Chiron in 1931 and, most recently, Charles Leclerc's emotional win in 2024. He will be looking for his subsequent victory in 2025.

More Than Just a Race:

The Monaco Grand Prix is an immersive experience. The finest hotels in the world, with their sprawling terraces, balconies, and gardens overlooking the track, become prime viewing spots. Hospitality reaches its peak, with champagne flowing freely and Michelin-starred cuisine.

Every part of Monaco gets involved, from the vibrant cafes, bars, and restaurants lining the track to the bustling clubs and apartments. It's a sensational coming together, celebrating the incredible event against the stunning French Riviera in a Monte Carlo backdrop.

The McLarens are looking for their world-breaking 16th win.

Ferrari's Charles LeClerc will be looking for his second Monaco win, and with only three weeks to go, we can already feel the excitement building.
