Why Losing Zandvoort Leaves a Unique Void in F1®

At the Senate Grand Prix, we share nostalgia and sadness, as we have grown to love the Zandvoort circuit.

The news that Circuit Zandvoort will officially take its final bow in 2026 marks the end of one of the most vibrant, electrifying chapters in modern Formula 1® history.

Circuit Zandvoort

Zandvoort is far more than just a circuit; it’s an entire sensory experience.

Some of the reasons I will miss this track are that it's carved directly into the sweeping coastal sand dunes of North Holland, transforming a Grand Prix weekend into an unmissable seaside festival complete with orange flare smoke, beach club energy, world-class DJ sets, and sunsets over the North Sea.

The Unique Gauntlet of the Dunes

From a driver's perspective, Zandvoort restored an old-school, uncompromising challenge to the calendar:

  • The Banking: The stunning 18-degree banking at Turn 3 (Hugenholtz) and Turn 14 (Arie Luyendyk) delivered a high-speed, roller-coaster sensation unlike anywhere else on earth.
  • Zero Margin for Error: Unlike modern venues with acres of asphalt run-off, Zandvoort’s narrow asphalt ribbon is flanked by genuine sand and grass. Run wide, and you are immediately buried in the dunes.
  • The Sea Breeze Factor: Constant, shifting winds off the coast carry actual sand across the tarmac, subtly altering grip levels from lap to lap and testing a driver's raw adaptability.

The Business Behind the Decision

It seems paradoxical that at the height of Max Verstappen’s generational era, his home Grand Prix would step aside.

However, I do not pretend to understand the economics of keeping an F1 circuit, and the hidden metrics of modern Formula 1® dictate the grid.

THE REALITIES OF ZANDVOORT'S FAREWELL

Promoter Decision: The Dutch GP organisers chose a 1-year extension through 2026 rather than entering a bi-annual rotation plan.

Commercial Pressures: As a 100% privately funded event with zero state subsidies, maintaining financial viability against soaring hosting fees is exceptionally tough.

Infrastructural Limits: Being nestled in a protected coastal dune reserve limits physical expansion for larger hospitality structures.

A Bittersweet Transition

While the calendar evolves, welcoming back the natural rollercoaster of Portimão and the high-g-force challenge of Istanbul Park for 2027, the atmosphere generated by the Sea of Orange in the dunes remains completely irreplaceable.
