The Changing Face of the F1® Calendar

The confirmation that the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (Portimão) is taking over Zandvoort’s slot under a two-year deal (2027–2028), combined with Istanbul Park’s return on a landmark five-year contract through 2031, has offered a mixed bag of emotions and opinions. 

This, for me, represents a seismic shift in Formula 1®’s long-term calendar strategy.

This evolution brings massive excitement for purists, but it also prompts a crucial debate: Is shifting back toward European and Eurasian stability the right play for the sport’s long-term health? 

But for me, with the problems in the Middle East, it is what needed to be done; however, I am sad to see Zandvoort gone.

The Pure Racing Return: Portimão & Istanbul

From a pure racing perspective, both additions are absolute masterpieces.

• Portimão’s Algarve circuit’s natural elevation changes, blind crests, and wide-sweeping turns proved during 2020–2021 that it fosters incredible, multi-line wheel-to-wheel battles.

•  Istanbul Park is a driver favourite; it brings back the legendary quad-apex Turn 8. This brutal, high-g-force corner tests physical endurance and aerodynamic stability to the absolute limit.

Stability vs Geopolitical Turmoil: Is the Calendar Shifting West?

In the current global climate, long-term calendar security is paramount. 

The recent disruptions surrounding the Middle Eastern rounds have highlighted the vulnerability of relying heavily on specific regions for the season's heavy lifting.

Securing multi-year agreements with venues closer to Europe’s logistical heartland offers Stefano Domenicali and Liberty Media a vital safety net:

1. Logistical Efficiency: Lower freight costs, reduced carbon footprints, and shorter travel distances for team personnel based in Motorsport Valley
2. Accessible Fanbases: Stronger accessibility for European fans alongside American travellers who are increasingly pairing F1 races with broader European vacations.

Yet, for all the operational sense it makes, losing or scaling back the Arabian night races leaves a distinct void that traditional European circuits simply cannot replicate.

The Spectacle Factor: The Middle Eastern night races—Bahrain, Jeddah, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi—redefined modern F1® hospitality. 

The floodlit desert backdrop, luxury yacht harbours, ultra-modern paddock facilities, and vibrant cultural fusion provided a spectacle that captivated global television audiences and VIP guests alike.

While locking in European and Eurasian venues guarantees the sport's operational stability, this is what is needed right now. 

Balancing classic driver-centric tracks with iconic destination events will be the defining challenge for the sport's leadership over the next decade.
